The Future of Social Media Is A Scary Thing

I spend a lot of time dealing with WordPress, Facebook, and Twitter. The time that I spend on each platform has me thinking about the future of social media and how long it will be around. Will I be 80 years old and tweeting about my false teeth and my walker? Maybe so. I will not blame you if you don’t read my tweets when I’m 80 years old.

Where do you see the future of social media heading? What are some things you would like to see in the next big social media craze?

I think it will be around for quite some time, but as with anything it will grow, change, adapt and become even better than it is now. The one thing that will need to change is the privacy regulations — to protect users and keep information that doesn't need to be easily accessible by any member of the public away from those that could use it for harm.

As for me, social media is now confined to my blog. I deleted my facebook and twitter accounts looking for real life connections…granted, I've made some good friends via the social webs (i.e. you) but I have been feeling like I've been spending more time with the social webs than the folks right in front of me.

As for the next big thing in Social Media…well, hopefully it follows me backwards and we all start writing letters to one another and talking on the phone again. LOL!

Facebook is for my friends, twitter is more or less for promoting my site and other people's sites.

I really have no clue which way it is headed. My desire is too spend less time with SM and more time with people personally. But that is just me and my convictions.

Funny thing about more 'progress' in social media: it's more dangerous to drive. Maybe that's not too funny, but if it wasn't bad enough to have a bad driver talking on the phone, or worse yet, texting, now Apple has given us FaceTime on the iPhone 4 and we've got mobile Skype!

I don't know about you, but I take a lot of crap from my friends about all of the social media and networks that i'm a part of. It's kinda just my thing though. I don't know. I feel like it is the best way to network with people from around the world (speaking of twitter here) and until somebody comes up with something better, I think that it will be around. Given, social networking takes away from relationships right in front of our faces, something probably needs to change that unless that's just how its going to be for the rest of time. I think there are negatives and positives, but the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.
