Being tired, fatigued, mentally exhausted or whatever you want to call it, happens to all of us. And if life hasn’t punched you in the mouth lately, then either you’re doing it exceptionally well or you’re preparing to take another risk. Either way, this post is for you. Whether you are currently digging out of a hole or your future self needs a little boost, you’re probably experiencing exhaustion because of one of these 4 areas:
- Your schedule is too full.
“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.” – Stephen Covey
As much as all of us want to be superheroes, there is such thing as doing too much. And the only way to get better at focusing your time on the right things is to get better at saying “no”. If it doesn’t bring you closer to your goals, then it’s probably time to cut it out.
- You’re too focused on managing your calendar and not your energy.
“You cannot pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.” – Norm Kelly
Time management is super important, but if you’ve gotten good at managing your time and calendar, then it’s time to better manage your energy. Merely eating better foods and going for a walk when you don’t feel like it will make you feel better, I promise. Wintertime can really suck the energy out of you if you let it, but being intentional with your health is always a great place to start.
- You’ve allowed other people to dictate your energy.
“The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” – Aristotle
If you allow others to dictate your mood, then you’ve lost. Most people will always want more from you and will care about themselves more than you at the end of the day. This is why having time alone to focus on yourself and to put self-care high on your priority list is a necessity, especially for those who need alone time to recharge.
- You’ve lost your sense of purpose.
“You often feel tired, not because you’ve done too much, but because you’ve done too little of what sparks a light in you.” – Alexander Den Heijer
Tying into the previous point, Warren Buffett also said, “Without passion, you don’t have energy. Without energy, you have nothing.” If you ever lose your sense of purpose, it’s easy to feel a lack of motivation. But remember, there’s always a reason to be excited about the opportunity of having another day to impact other people for the better. And it’s in that where you can begin to find your sense of purpose. Why? Because focusing on yourself increases suffering and focusing on others spreads joy. And joy, true joy, is what gives life.
If you’re exhausted, then my advice is to look at these four areas of your life and be really honest with yourself on how you’re doing. Your schedule, energy levels, peer group, and sense of purpose are all very important to your overall well-being.
