The social media site that I continue to see the best results with is twitter. It could be the simplicity, the people that use it, the hashtags or the 140 characters. Whatever it is, twitter drives tons of traffic and is worth a look. If you have tried using it before and lost interest, you should take another look at what twitter can do for you.
Here are five ways that I have gotten great results with twitter and I believe you can use them to do the same with twitter as well.
1. Create conversations with others and make friends.
Communication is key when building and relationship within a community. Meet new people. Find people that share your interests and introduce yourself. We make social media relationships to be really different to other relationships, but the truth is they are the same. The great thing is that when you do this, you expand your circle and your influence as well.
2. Brand everything with your twitter link.
Emails. Website. Business cards.
Whatever you have to brand yourself that will be shared with others, use it to your advantage.
3. Know what your audience wants.
Your bio should somewhat explain the tweets that you will be delivering to your audience. Let the reader know what they are getting into as soon as possible, so they know if they want to start following. you find what works. Pay attention. Take notes. See what type of tweets get the most RTs and favorites and repeat that when possible.
4. Send your readers somewhere else.
I know this sounds weird to say because this is supposed to be a post about twitter, but with 140 characters, twitter is best used as a means of sending people somewhere else to where you can better explain yourself.
Send your readers to something that has substance, value, that is worth reading and most importantly something that will change lives. Because that is what we all want, right?
When twitter is used this way, it can be one of your highest traffic drivers that you have. If you are new to social media, I would start by sending your readers to something along the lines of a wordpress blog through twitter and see what kind of growth you have with using those tools.
5. Know where you stand.
Use sites such as tweet grader and klout to let you know where you are at with your twitter stats. These are the two respected twitter programs that will help you start in the right direction. Use them to your advantage starting today.

I have a question for you though. I am revamping my blog for its relaunch on Aug 1 so there isn’t much of “my own stuff” to send people too until then. How could I build a following in the meantime? Any suggestions? Could you view my Twitter profile and suggestions on how to improve it?
Share other’s irresistible content of others to your readers and use this time to figure out how to best use twitter. Start with conversation with your community. Maybe you could figure out how to best use all social media sites during this time too since you have extra time.
Big ones: twitter, facebook, google+, pinterest and instagram.
