Your voice matters, and the biggest roadblock to changing the world is believing that your voice doesn’t matter. Anyone who wants to leave a lasting impact on people will soon find out that if they don’t speak into the lives of others, they will quickly become a follower rather than a leader. And while it is important to first know how to be a good follower, I want to speak directly to the idea of being a better leader.
The biggest roadblock to changing the world is believing that your voice doesn't matter. Share on XSo, how can you begin finding your voice? You can start with answering these three questions:
What are you good at?
You have specific skills for a reason. Maybe you have spent time developing a craft because you enjoy it, and are now proficient in that area. Or, maybe you quickly caught on in an area, because you were genuinely interested in learning more about it. Or, maybe just the thought of being excellent at something is your driving force. Whatever it is that makes you good at something, your skills matter. Finding your voice is tied to taking notice of what you are good at.
What were you made to do?
Maybe you’ve found that your thought process is different from others, and have wondered why that is. Well, I would say that you think the way you do for a reason. Or, maybe you have wondered why some people gravitate towards you and others don’t. That would be because your personality — empathy, sympathy, etcetera, or the lack of — shows who you are.
Just as your work speaks to some people and doesn’t to others, your personality does the same, and that’s okay. Every individual’s unique characteristics are there for a reason, waiting to be used in a unique and impactful way. We need you and your unique voice.
What are you passionate about?
What is it that provokes a good anger inside of you? What changes would you like to see take place in this world? What are your hopes and dreams? Knowing these answers and seeing how they relate to each other is important in productively directing your passionate voice. Passion is a driving force in finding your voice.
