selfish – lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one’s own personal profit or pleasure.
survival – the state or fact of continuing to live or exist.
If you’ve ever considered spending time with another person, but didn’t based on fulfilling your own needs, that’s not being selfish, that’s survival. To continue existing you need rest, you need ideas, you need care, you need to feel loved, and the list goes on.
This basis of this thought process is called the pour effect. What this means is that you first have to pour into yourself, before you pour into others. If you don’t fill your own life up first, then you will have nothing to give away to others.
So, the next time you are questioning if something is survival or selfish, filter it with this question:
Will doing this one thing help other people in the future?
