I will now add an Apple iPad review to the other million or so. This review comes after having my iPad for only one week, but I feel I have had enough time to give an honest opinion on it. My opinion is probably not what you are thinking, though.

I feel like I should say that I won my iPad from Dealsplus and the iPad is not a “need” item. If I were to spend $600 on something, it would not be an Apple iPad. If I had $600 to spend, I would keep using my Macbook Pro as my mobile device and I would buy a Mac Mini because I could really use a desktop computer. That’s just my need right now, but yours might be different.

First, I would like to focus on the positive things about this device in my iPad review. It has an amazing picture quality, has great battery life, is lightweight, and the sound is great as well. The iBooks is amazing given the screen size of the iPad. I would definitely rather use it than a smaller kindle or nook. For what you get, the Apple iPad has a great price tag, too. That alone might sell this product to you. When I think about other items in the market at this price, I would rather have an Apple product any day. Those are the best things I have found with the iPad.

The iPad will not replace your laptop, however. It is a new device that is great for surfing the internet and composing and checking mail. After having the iPad for a few days, I was back to using my laptop 95% of the time. This is the reason I cannot recommend the Apple iPad. I can’t find a reason to pull it out of my bad instead of my laptop. I think this is because the functionality I wanted and expected from the iPad was missing.

After hearing my thoughts from this iPad review, what do you think?

  1. Thanks for the review. What a shame I was so looking forward to purchasing the IPAD
when it hit uk shores. I suppose you have the upper hand that at least you didn’t spend any money on it.

  2. I've been seriously thinking about getting one but need to know how it is for reading PDF's and specifically taking notes on PDFs? That's the main reason why I want to get one, all day all I do is read and take notes on readings. Even now, 100+ pages of paper surround me, it would be worth $600 dollars if I had a viable solution to simplify that.

    • I'm really enjoying mine. I bought it specifically for the ability to read PDFs for the classes I'm taking. I'm using GoodReader for just reading PDFs and I"m trying out an app called smartNote for PDF annotations (highlighting, adding text notes, free hand drawing). Definitely something that could work. I haven'f fully exercised smartNote yet, but some options to consider if you get the iPad.

  3. I will definitely look into getting myself one, once they come to South Africa. I would also look to get the 3G version, and use it as a true mobile reader device, for mails, blogs and eBooks. Nothing more though.

    • It sounds perfect for you then. I won the wi-fi version, so let me know how you like the 3G one when you get it. I imagine it's tons better since you can do everything on the go 🙂

  4. I think it is all a matter of lifestyle. Apple would love to appeal to everyone with the iPad, but it's just not going to happen. Some people feel they have great use for the iPad while others say it is worthless. So in the end it is all a matter of opinion and what suits your lifestyle best. I am with you that I definitely don't have extra money for this toy and if I had the money it would need to go toward things that I feel I need. I wonder if there is anyone out there who would consider the iPad a necessity in their life.

  5. there is an app called "papers" for $14.99 which I have heard is all around great for PDF's. I heard of some one using for that exact problem. So, for you it might be great!

    • That's really good news, now if I could snag a free one that'd be even better 🙂 Either way I spend money though, this seems more sustainable in the long run, less paper, ink, and mess.
