When You Think Everyone Else Around You Knows About Church

Have you ever been around a group of people so often that you begin to think whatever they do becomes the normal thing and that everybody else should know about these things? Well for me, growing up in church and going to Christian schools for a lot of my schooling and being friends with the people that attended my church and school, I believe that my knowledge of all things hip with Jesus is pretty high.

So, here are three things that has stuck with me all of these years:

1. Gospel Bill

I watched Gospel Bill too many times to count and maybe you did, too.

2. Carman

Carman was the man when it came to Christian music. RIOT?

3. Rapture Movies – “A Thief In The Night”

This movie scared me. I mean really scared me. When I couldn’t find my parents, I thought the rapture happened. That’s not a good mental state for any kid to have.

Anyways, after looking at these things recently, I realize just how different things are now. I didn’t include sword drills or the pledge to the Christian flag every morning or getting a bad grade for not memorizing a weekly schedule or Sunday school felt boards in this post, but I think you can get the picture.

Not everybody knows about these Jesus things, though. I mention these things to people now and they just stare back at me with a puzzled look. I’m facing it now… These were not the “hip” things and never will be again. I’m sorry Carman.

Didn’t see ATITN until I was older, but my parents ran a Christian book lending library.

I got to read lots of Christian books that I shouldn’t have read at a young age, some of which, by their very existence, would actually justify a book burning.

One of those books was called “666”, and its sequel was “1000”.

It was a mash-up of conspiracy theories, futurism, a fundamentalist interpretation of the book of Revelations and bad, bad writing.

I was 10, and didn’t know any better, and I nearly 30 years later still have irrational fears that I can trace back to those books…
