Ok, I know how I want to use Facebook now.
And I know how I want to use my blog.
And I know how I use twitter.
But, I can’t quite figure out Google+.
I used to spend tons of time on social media sites. I was trying to force things to happen sooner rather than later, which worked for me. The more time I put into it, the faster it would grow. I guess that happens when you focus on specifics. While some see that they lose followers when they post too much, when I post more content, I gain more followers and add traffic to my different sites. I figured that out a while ago. I just can’t spend the same amount of time doing that.
I’ve been dabbling with social media for about two years now and I am just now realizing what my objective really is with social media. I use my different social media sites to start conversations, bring awareness to topics that my audience is interested in and most of all have fun while doing it. I have figured out that when I stop having fun, I just can’t keep doing it. Some would say to force through it, but if I’m not having fun, I don’t have time for it.
So, now I have a few questions for you…
How do you use each social media site? How much time do you spend on social media stuff each day? What do you really want out of social media?

Interesting question, so I guess I’ll bite.
I’m of the school of “don’t overthink it” when it comes to social media… I don’t have goals. I just post what I feel like posting where it feels the most comfortable to post it. Despite having a fair bit of knowledge about how to generate a following, who my audiences are, how social media works, etc. I try to ignore all of that stuff and just use it like a normal human being.
For me, my Twitter audience is largely people from the Drupal community along with an assortment of random people that I’ve met from all over the Internet. My Facebook is largely people I had some sort of real life connection with… old high school acquaintances, family members and real life friends. I tend to post on these media with these audiences in mind….
For example, I’m much more likely to post things having to do with politics on Twitter than Facebook because I don’t want to deal with the backlash that I’m going to inevitably receive from certain members of my friends list. I’m more likely to post the song I can’t get out of my head on Faecbook than Twitter because my audience there cares about it more. So on and so forth…
And then.. There’s Google+. I’m with you on that one… I have no clue.
I have 262 people following me, and I look at the list and wonder “WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE AND WHY ARE THEY FOLLOWING ME!?”
I suspect many of them are from the Drupal community and I just don’t recognize them because I don’t know anybody’s real name.
Heck, that’s how I ended up here… I apparently follow you and I have no idea who you are or why we would know each other. Any ideas?

Well, I guess that’s what social media is for. To expand community and gain ideas/thoughts from other users that are either like-minded or people ou want to learn from. Anyways, social media is what people make it I guess. You can either come up with rules and overthink it or just say what comes to mind. That’s the beauty of it.
