It’s Not That God Doesn’t Talk

You probably have heard so many people say that “God just doesn’t talk to me.” I know I have. Well, as far as I know, He still talks… We just don’t always take the time to be quiet and listen. I know I don’t always make listening my first step in problem solving. I usually just try and take it all in my hands. That never works by the way.

So, if you are waiting on an answer to that thing that you’re going through, here is your reminder…

Stop and Listen.

I try and teach my college students that prayer isn’t just about reciting a list of things you want from God, it’s about taking time to listen to what He has to say. Sometimes that means sitting in silence so you can actually hear Him.

“Have you ever needed a word from God but God is on mute and the remote is lost down the back of some cosmic sofa?”

I completely understand what you’re getting at here in terms of exercising the discipline of silence and that is so important.  But, I also know and have experienced that sometimes, when you’re under such pressure and stress that it can be tough to hear from God even when you are listening.  In my case it happened after we lost our five year old son, Josiah, to cancer.  The above statement was so true.  And going from feeling like I had a red telephone to heaven (I didn’t) to hearing nothing, that was so tough.

But I think I understand why… our spirit, mind, and body are all wired together and connected.  They aren’t separate from each other.  And when your mind is so numb from all that’s going on, it’s tough to hear from God.  I mean… isn’t that where God “speaks”.  In our mind.  Our minds hear words and thoughts and we sense that it’s not something normal but from something outside us and supernatural.  We have this sensing.  But what happens when you’re so tired from being put through the wringer.  You’re so worn out from the pain and grief.  It’s tough to hear from God.

That’s when faith really counts.  To be able to say… I hear nothing and haven’t for a while.  God is on Mute.  But even though he’s silent (and at times he is), he’s not blind to where I am.  He still loves me.  He’s still working on my behalf.
