from a 17″ macbook pro to an 11″ macbook air

I tweeted last week that I made the switch from a super powered 17″ MacBook Pro, to a quick and nimble 11″ MacBook Air. As you can expect there were a few changes to get used to, especially the screen size. After getting used to that part, I really have enjoyed not having to carry around a big laptop all the time.

Here are the pros I have found so far with the Air:
Let’s state the obvious first of all. It’s a lot cheaper and that’s a good thing.
I wanted an iPad and a laptop, but didn’t want two machines. This is my compromise.
It is just so portable. You would think that it wouldn’t make that much of a difference, but it really does.
It does just what I need and still has some power behind it. I surf the internet, listen to music organize photos and write for the most part. I need to use reason, ableton live, photoshop, lightroom, and dreamweaver sometimes and it still does what I need with these programs.
Compared to the 17″, they actually make nice bags for this computer. This might sound like a small issue, but it’s a big deal to me for some reason.
It doesn’t have a disc drive. I listed this as a con as well, but I feel that the future is switching this way anyways. Might as well adopt this feature early.

Here are the cons I have found:
If you like screen space, you might want a desktop at home with a bigger screen to satisfy this need.
It is almost too thin where I feel I might break it. If I dropped this one, I wouldn’t expect it to survive to tell you the truth.
No disc drive.
I need an external hard drive more often now due to limited space.
There’s no ethernet cord plugin. This might be a con to most, but it’s definitely ok with me. It’s another thing that makes it feel like an iPad.

So, what are your thoughts on the Air and what kind of computer(s) do you have?

I dream of having the money to afford something like a MacBook Air. However, if I ever do, I’ll probably spend it on a TV or something.

I don’t have a Macbook Air myself, but my brother does and I really am interested in getting one. I think it would be great for all the traveling I do. I currently have a 13″ Macbook that I use for everything, including my branding/design business. I probably wouldn’t use it all the time, but definitely for traveling and smaller projects.

I don’t think I would mind that it doesn’t have a disk drive. I can’t remember the last time I used mine. The only thing I would miss is the display plug, as I use my Macbook to watch movies on my TV.

They may have, I honestly don’t remember. I just knew they were limited in the number of ports and for some reason thought the display port was left off.
