Hiring to Your Culture

Hiring to Your Culture

This is a guest post from Devin Morrissey. He has been a dishwasher, a business owner, and everything in between. You can follow him on Twitter.

Company culture is a great way to build an environment of success that continues to attract great employees and leaders. Hiring people who mesh well with that culture helps you bring in people with the same mindset who can continue to build that culture from the inside.

It can be tricky to hire for culture. You have to ask yourself some questions:

  • Do you have a well-defined culture in your workplace?
  • How can you determine if a candidate fits into your culture in two or three meetings?
  • How much of your desired culture are you willing to sacrifice if you are in desperate need of personnel?

Your Team Needs to Think

One of your top responsibilities as a leader is to have people think for themselves. Removing obstacles for employees yourself only goes so far. So before telling people what to do next time, try asking them more questions. Voltaire said, “Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.” and his words most definitely apply to leaders. Asking great questions forces your team to think about coming up with better solutions, rather than forcing you to feed your team answers all the time. And the more people thinking about solutions, while having a common goal in mind, the better off you and your team are.
