One day, a mentor of mine asked me, “Adam, what do you want people to say about you at your funeral?” The question took me by surprise. He wasn’t usually so morbid, and I wasn’t planning on dying anytime soon, so where was this question coming from? But as I pondered it for a second, I realized there was more to this question. He then followed with, “What you do right now directly affects their remarks… So, what are a few one word responses that immediately come to mind?”
That made it easier. So, I started rattling off whatever came to mind, and ended up with these five words:
Successful
Humble
Loving
Passionate
Brave
I can remember this exercise because I journaled it. The entry date is from 2005.
Feel free to do this exercise yourself, but use it as a reminder that your yesterday and today is what you will be known for tomorrow. You don’t get to just skip over the work that it takes to produce a great legacy, but it is living a remarkable life each day that leaves a lasting impression on this world. The good news is that if you are dissatisfied with your yesterday, know that the best time to produce better results with your life is right now.
