Ten Things to Help You Influence Up

We talk a lot about supervising people and running projects. One of the distinguishing traits of leaders who make a bigger impact in organizations is their ability to influence their boss(es), and by extension their boss(es).

I’m not talking about manipulation or sucking up or currying favor. Those tactics cease to work after a time. Be aware that others will use manipulative tactics (including on you) but don’t do them yourself. Henry Mintzberg was right when he said we all hate the people who “kiss upward and kick downward.”

Instead, develop the mindset of pursuing effectiveness. You’re much more effective for your organization, yourself, and especially your team when you effectively influence up.

[Note: You’ll hear the term “Managing up” but you don’t manage your boss(es). You can influence them but don’t mistakenly think you manage them.]

Want to influence more people through your work? Go first. That is why bravery and creativity are such important subjects of focus. You have to go where no one else will go and create things that others aren’t creating to stand out in the crowd. You cannot lead without first producing innovative products so that people will follow.

Think of the biggest businesses in the world right now in 2017 — Apple, Amazon, Facebook — they all built something first, giving others the option to follow later on. Apple built amazing computers and phones and now the world gets to enjoy them on a daily basis. They even have multiple companies imitating them, but people know who the original is. As long as Apple continues to become better, their results will attract even more people. Same for Amazon and Facebook. They continue to innovate, attracting even more people to use their products.

Use Influence to Change Others

You can’t immediately change people, but you can influence them to eventually change. This is why influence is the most important part of leadership.
